A PAIR OF BRONZE MEDICI HORSE’S HEADS

Probably 20th Century.
From the 1st/2nd Century B.C. Hellenistic Greek original.

A pair of similar bronze horse’s heads cast after the Antique original which once belonged to the Medici, thought to have been originally acquired by Lorenzo di Medici (1449-1492) for his private collection, and which is now in the Archaeological Museum in Florence.

Tradition holds that this was the source of inspiration for Verrocchio and Donatello as they cast their own equestrian monuments during the Italian Renaissance. It was probably once part of a Hellenistic Greek sculpture from the 1st or 2nd Century B.C.

These bronzes have been outside and have an attractive weathered verdigris patination.

Height: 30”(76 cm).  Width: 14” (36 cm).  Depth: 38” (97 cm).
