Francois
Duquenoy was born in Brussels in1794, and studied with his father, the
sculptor Heinrich Duquesnoy. His
skill in carving led to Archduke Albert inviting him to study in Rome,
where he undertook a number of important commissions in wood, ivory,
bronze and marble, including the baldaquin over the high altar and the
colossal statue of St Andrew with his cross in St Peter’s, and the figure
of St Susanna in the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto. He was a comtemporary
of Bernini and a friend of Poussin, who recommended him to Cardinal
Richelieu, and it was while on his way to Paris that he was taken ill
and died at Livourne. He is
particularly well known for his beautiful figures of children.
