A WHITE MARBLE RELIEF PORTRAIT PANEL AFTER DESIDERIO DA SETTIGNANO (1428-1463)
Italian – 19 th Century. After the Florentine Renaissance Original.
A fine white marble arched panel, depicting the profile portrait of a young woman, carved in low relief after the original by Desiderio da Settignano.
Desiderio was born at Settignano, Tuscany and died in Florence. The son of a stone-cutter, he was admitted to the Maestri di Pietra in 1453. He studied under Donatello, and become recognised as one of the great artists of his day, particularly known for the fineness and delicacy of his portraits and bas-reliefs , as here.
